Cheryl J. Butler, MA, LPC

cherylProfessional Background: What an honor it is to have a profession doing what I am passionate about!  I worked in the community as an educator (first grade, fifth grade, seventh grade) before obtaining my degree in counseling. My master’s degree in counseling is from Sam Houston State University, and my undergraduate work was completed at Pennsylvania State University.  I served as a school counselor at a K-6 campus and now desire to help families and individuals in a more focused arena, doing individual, group, and couple’s therapy.

Clinical Focus: I have a heart for working with children, adolescence, and parents to improve the parent-child bond, as well as working with families who are dealing with difficult issues and transitions (infertility, divorce, grief, moving, sibling conflict, finances, parenting techniques, etc.). I desire to help families work together to strengthen marriages through communication techniques, forgiveness, mutual respect, and conflict-resolution. I am honored to work with individuals on specific issues such as: relationships, career goals, adoption counseling, self-esteem, attention deficit symptoms, chronic illness, academic concerns, obsessive compulsive symptoms, sexual abuse trauma, etc.

Treatment Philosophy: I believe in treating all of my clients with honesty, dignity, and respect. My role is to cooperate with you to help you pursue a clear sense of truth, discernment, and self-worth. I will actively listen and engage with you in our sessions, helping you find the most effective solutions to the problems, while taking into consideration your emotional, physical, and spiritual well being. By forming a partnership during counseling, I will be modeling problem-solving strategies, communication techniques, and coping skills that will enable you to walk through the trial(s) that you are dealing with.

Personal Interests: Although I am a “Yankee” by birth…I am a Southerner at heart! My husband is my best friend and we are the proud parents of twin boys.I am thankful for my church family and the relationship I have with the Lord!  My hobbies are many…and ever changing! I love to read! Redeeming Love, by Francine Rivers is my (current) favorite book. Travelling to wonderful places is something I will never take for granted. I love to bake from scratch, find hidden treasures in thrift stores, and be outdoors where I always hope to catch a glimpse of some wildlife!
